I don’t typically like to get political with my content, because Lord knows we are ALL politically exhausted. Still, given the second anniversary of Dobbs vs Jackson, I thought it might be good to share what life looks like now and how we can continue the fight to end abortion in our country. Two years ago, on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the United States Constitution does not confer a right to abortion, hence overturning both Roe V Wade and Planned Parenthood V Casey. What this means, is that abortion is now regulated by the states instead of federally. States are now able to make their own laws on abortion.
I’m sure you probably didn’t need that quick lesson, but some people still get confused – “If we don’t have Roe, why do we still have abortion?” While the Dobbs decision did overturn Roe and Casey, it did not end abortion completely, or make it illegal.
Looking back, as a woman who has experienced the true cost of abortion, I celebrated that day. This was a huge accomplishment for life. However, the Supreme Court’s decision did bring a lot of emotions, as there were so many people fighting on social media, as well as people spreading misinformation about treatment for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies. It was a tough time emotionally, but it was a thing to celebrate, a step in the right direction.
While that remains true, I think it’s important to talk about what life is really like post-roe. In my mind, overturning Roe was going to solve a ton of problems and save a ton of lives. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.
I want to share some facts with you that show the reality of the war we continue to face against abortion.
- The amount of abortions per year has gone up, not down. In 2023, we saw an 11% increase in abortions since 2020 (there is no complete data for 2021 or 2022). This is the highest number of abortions in the US in over a decade.
- Medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions in 2023, a 10% increase from 2020. This isn’t surprising considering the fact that the abortion pill is so easily accessible through the mail, not to mention there is no requirement to meet face-to-face with a doctor to get it. It’s an easy sell for the abortion industry.
What we can conclude from these two facts alone is this: the fight against abortion is far from over, and even with abortion bans there is not a single state in this nation that is truly abortion free.
Overturning Roe V. Wade was a step in the right direction, but the fight is far from over. What this tells me is that educating the public NEEDS to be a priority. We need to educate the public on embryology, development, on the true cost of abortion for the baby and also for the mother.
We all need to be doing something to end abortion for good.
3 Things You Can Start Doing to Help End Abortion:
- Support Pro-Life Companies
There are so many companies out there that truly support life. Find them and make the switch so that you can start voting with your dollar and stop funding abortion through your purchases.
Some of my favorites: Seven Weeks Coffee (use my code DGFA10 to save 10%), EveryLife for diapers and wipes (use my code 10BRITTANY to save 10%), Shop Pink Patriot for clothing, The Honeycomb Soul for clothing, Chapter 3 Beauty Collective for cosmetics, and Faith Farms for soaps and other goods. There are many more companies out there to support. Hitting pro-abortion businesses in their pocketbooks will help us to get closer to ending abortion. - Support Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers
Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers are always looking for volunteers and donations. Consider going through your kids’ clothing and donating the like-new items to their baby boutique. If you have the means, go on a shopping trip to purchase new baby items for these centers to give to their clients.
If funds are tight, consider donating your time. Volunteering is a rewarding experience. You could volunteer in the baby boutique or for other “behind the scenes” tasks if meeting with women in crisis pregnancies is scary for you. Give these centers your support, as they are helping women choose life! - Share Your Story
Sharing your story is so important for growing the Kingdom and growing awareness about the true cost of abortion. However, you do not have to shout this from the rooftops and tell everyone under the sun. Consider sharing your story with your local church, or those you know that might be faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Pray and ask God to lead you with this, and understand that you don’t have to share this with just anybody.
Healing from abortion is the backdoor approach to ending abortion because when we heal from this pain and share it with others, we are spreading the truth about abortion.
