For years after my abortion, I silently asked the same question over and over:
Why can’t I hear God anymore?
I’d pray.
I’d journal.
I’d cry into my pillow.
But the silence on the other side felt deafening.
And deep down, I thought I knew why.
It was because of what I had done. Because of my abortion. I assumed God had gone quiet—disappointed, distant, done with me.
Maybe you’ve felt that too?
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
—John 10:27 (ESV)
That verse used to pierce me. I wanted to be one of His sheep. I wanted to follow Him. But I thought I had strayed too far to hear His voice again.
But here’s the truth I wish someone would have told me sooner:
God never stopped speaking. I just didn’t recognize how He speaks.
Recently, I picked up Whisper by Mark Batterson—a book that explores the beautiful, unexpected ways God communicates with His children. Around the same time, I dug out 12 years’ worth of old journals, some tear-stained and raw, others filled with questions I thought God never answered.
But looking back now with fresh eyes and a healed heart, I saw something I hadn’t seen before:
God was there. Speaking. Nudging. Guiding. Whispering. Even in my darkest seasons.
So if you’ve ever wondered whether you’ve “ruined” your ability to hear God—especially after abortion—this post is for you.

Here are 7 ways God might already be speaking to you, even if you feel unworthy to listen:
1. Scripture
His Word isn’t just a book. It’s alive. It breathes. It speaks.
“For the word of God is living and active…” —Hebrews 4:12
Have you ever opened your Bible or devotional and felt like the verse was written just for you? That’s not a coincidence. That’s the Holy Spirit guiding you.
Before I understood how God speaks, I missed this. But now? Scripture is one of the clearest, most dependable ways I hear His voice.
2. Desires
Now, hear me—not every desire is from God. But some are.
Sometimes God plants desires in our hearts as breadcrumbs to lead us toward His will.
Years ago, I felt this random nudge to start a podcast. It didn’t make sense. I had no background in audio, no plan, no platform. But the desire wouldn’t go away.
Fast-forward to now? That desire turned into this very podcast, which has reached thousands of women around the world. He knew. He was speaking through that desire.
3. Doors
God opens doors. And He shuts them. Both are grace.
“What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.” —Revelation 3:7
I’ve heard women say, “I asked God for a sign not to go through with my abortion… and nothing happened.”
But friend, we can’t interpret Scripture through our circumstances. We interpret our circumstances through Scripture.
Even if you walked through a door God didn’t open, that doesn’t mean He’s stopped working in your story. He might be preparing a new door right now.

4. Dreams
God has spoken through dreams all throughout the Bible. It’s not spooky or weird—it’s biblical.
My mom has had powerful dreams that came to pass. Dreams that warned her, and caused her to wake in the middle of the night to pray over specific people.
Sometimes these are literal dreams. Other times, they’re the kind that live in your heart—the ones you’re scared to speak out loud. Don’t dismiss them too quickly. God might be stirring something holy.
5. People
Have you ever gotten a random text at the exact moment you needed encouragement? Or met someone who shared a word you didn’t know you needed?
That’s not random.
That’s the kindness of a God who sees you.
There’s a woman I know who was literally about to end her life when a stranger approached her, said something simple but profound, and interrupted that moment. She lived. That stranger? I believe he was sent by God.
Be on the lookout. The people in your life might be carrying a message straight from heaven.
6. Promptings
You can’t explain it.
You just know.
You feel led to reach out to someone.
You sense a holy nudge to apply for the job, leave the relationship, start the ministry, take the break.
That prompting? That could be the Holy Spirit.
When I left my former business to start this ministry, I didn’t hear an audible voice. But I knew—deep in my bones—it was time. Obeying that prompting changed everything.
7. Pain
“Sometimes God lets you hit rock bottom so you can realize He is the rock at the bottom.” —Tony Evans
God isn’t actively inflicting that pain that you’re feeling of grief over your sin. But He absolutely can use that pain to grow us, guide us, and heal us.
If your abortion grief has resurfaced recently, ask God:
What are you trying to show me in this?
What do I need to surrender?
Where do I still need healing?
He may be using your pain to lead you back to His presence.
